Lunar: Collectors Guide
Here is what you need to know about collecting the Sega CD
game Lunar: Silver Star:
As the best-selling RPG for the Sega CD, Lunar: Silver Star isn't so
rare that it's impossible to get. A mint condition copy of the game
should run you about $35-50, a reasonable price for the quality of the
game.

However, unlike many other rare collectibles Lunar: Silver Star was
released in seven different versions, giving the die-hard Lunar
collector a difficult and pricey task to accomplish. Each of the seven
different Silver Star releases features different artwork on the game
discs, resulting in seven different games that the die-hard collector
would have to obtain to make his collection complete.

While changing the artwork of a disc is fairly common in Japan, it's
almost undeard of for the American market---especially seven times!
Though, Working Designs had a good reason to change the disc art
the first time around. According to Working Designs the first label
"did not take the art all the way to the center because SEGA
manufactured it themselves and were not familiar with the "groove
fill" process."

As a result Working Designs took over control of the manufacturing of
all subsequent CD's and, thus, have art nearly to the center hole on
all the following discs. Therefore, as Working Designs points out "the
only difference between disc one and disc two is that the art on disc
two goes all the way to the center of the CD and disc one does not
(the art is the same on both)."

So, for any truly die-hard fans of the Lunar series, you have quite the
task ahead of you. I myself am satisfied with one label (I have disc
five), but have included pictures of all seven of the discs for those of
you who are interested in knowing which number you have, or are
considering collecting all seven of them. Just so you know, disc one
is the most common while disc seven is the most rare (but I'm not
sure about the rarity of the ones in between).
