#4 SCG's Review Guidelines
|
|
All of my reviews follow the same format. I will break the game down
into several sections: Gameplay, Graphics, Sound, Replay Value, and an Overall Score. Each distinct category will feature a specific score, but the overall score is not an average of these. When determining an overall score, a game should be judged in relation to its release date and system (obviously a Dreamcast game is going to have better graphics than a Genesis game), as well as its genre (do not cut down a puzzle game because it's not a first-person shooter).
Gameplay: control, camera angles, AI
Graphics: frame-rate, textures, and character models
Sound: sound effects, music, voice-acting
Replay Value: unlockable items, multiplayer, multiple endings
Overall: how well the game fares as a whole
Furthermore, all scores will be based on the percentage system (with
100% being flawless and 0% being worthless) To get a general idea about what each score range means on the percentage scale read this.
I only review games that I have played completely through as I
believe this to be the only way to give an adequate review of a game. Consequently, it would probably be a good idea if you did the same. Also, because of this I will not be able to post reviews as quickly as I would like to; which is why Reader Reviews are so helpful.
Regarding Reader Reviews: I highly encourage all readers to submit
their own reviews. The only requirement for submitting a review is to provide an overall score based on the percentage system above. However, I do recommend that you proofread your reviews before submitting them as I will not correct them for you, nor will I publish reviews that are plagued with errors. And finally, regarding length: I only ask that you provide enough material to support your final score. If it helps, I try to keep all of my reviews between 500-1500 words, but I don't expect you to go as in depth as I do (but if you want to, go for it). You may provide scores for individual categories, but this is not a requirement. All submitted work must be original---that is, it must be of your own creation and must not have appeared on another site.
Regarding Editorial Reviews: I try to be as honest and unbiased as
possible in all my reviews. I strive not to be overly critical nor overly generous, but to give a fair opinion on the merits of a game. Obviously not everyone is going to agree with my reviews, which is why I encourage you to both send me your comments about my reviews and, even more so, to submit your own reviews.
I feel that I am fairly flexible in my review policy, the one requirement
is meant to maintain uniformity; in order to provide greater clarity for the readers. However, in most cases I encourage you to cover more specific aspects of a game such as its story, it's originality, or its overall fun factor.
Please use my review of NiGHTS as a guideline (keeping in mind that
not all games are this good) and if you would like to submit a review just follow these easy steps:
1. Play a game from start to finish
2. Write a review under the aforementioned guidelines
3. Edit it for errors
4. Email it to me either as an attachment (Microsoft Word Document
or Rich Text Format) or as the body of your email with [SCG Reader Review - "the name of the game"] as the subject.
Note:
Those who contribute a significant number of original Reader Reviews
may earn a spot in the Staff Biography section. |
